Today, Kenneth L. Rosenfeldis known for being one of the top California criminal defense attorneys. With a career that spans more than 25 years as a criminal defense lawyer in California, he has broken records and won many high-stakes cases in the state. He is a member of prestigious legal organizations such as the American Bar Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. His frequent appearances on current events commentary television programs such as FOX40’s “Ask an Attorney” and radio programs have also cemented his reputation as an expert and influential thought leader in the legal field. Despite his fame and long track record of success in California, his origins and formative experiences took place on the other side of the country in Brooklyn, New York.
Rosenfeld was born into a family with an impressive history, as his grandfather was one of the founding members of the New York Stock Exchange. Rosenfeld served as a pest exterminator, working for his grandfather’s pest control business. While he did not continue on this career path, he did learn how to have an aggressive, results-driven, entrepreneurial mindset, which served him well in his later career as the founder of The Rosenfeld Law Firm.
After visiting California on vacation, he decided to stay and began studying criminal law in Sacramento. He graduated in 1996 and passed the bar exam the same year, being admitted to the State Bar of California on December 11. He was also admitted to the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Northern Districts of California. He soon began building his reputation as a felony defense lawyer on his expertise in topics such as criminal defense, juvenile defense, white-collar crime, mental health defense, and appellate law.
Rosenfeld went on to establish The Rosenfeld Law Firm in Sacramento. Some of his prominent early case wins as a mental health defense lawyer and celebrity criminal defense attorney involved successful defenses of individuals with mental health issues, as well as celebrities facing sexual assault and DUI charges. Through his successful and aggressive defenses of clients throughout California, Rosenfeld distinguished himself as an attorney capable of winning even the most challenging, highly publicized cases.
He became well known for winning the largest criminal filing in California’s history, which was the case of the “Tax Lady,” former Sacramento Tax Attorney Roni Deutch. According to court documents, Roni Deutch was facing 1,609 criminal contempt acts, $34 million in fines, and a potential 22 years of prison time after the State of California brought charges against her. After Rosenfeld’s skillful defense, all of the charges against Deutch were dropped, and her fines were reduced from $34 million to $2.5 million.
Rosenfeld also secured dismissals and acquittals for several other famous California cases, including the ongoing case of Sharon Simas, former executive assistant to the Stockton mayor, who was accused of embezzlement, money laundering, and conflict-of-interest charges. Rosenfeld was able to get 19 charges against her dismissed. He also secured a victory for his client, Patrick O’Neal, in California’s second-largest child sex case in 2001. He currently serves as the lead attorney in the ongoing case of former NFL player Dana Stubblefield.
For his success as an attorney, Rosenfeld received ongoing recognition over the years, including the 2020 Litigator of the Year award from the American Institute of Trial Lawyers, 2021 and 2023 Lawyer of Distinction honors from The New York Times, and a spot on the Super Lawyers list from 2021–2024. As an educator, he has also shared his passion for victory in court with the next generation of lawyers. He served as an instructor teaching constitutional law, evidence, and personal responsibility to students preparing for the California Bar Exam.
Rosenfeld continues to look toward the future, focusing on expanding the reach of The Rosenfeld Law Firm throughout Northern and Southern California. In addition to its headquarters in Sacramento, the firm has offices in San Jose and Riverside County. With more than two decades of experience and a competitive mindset that makes him the ideal representative in challenging trials, Ken Rosenfeld plans to keep winning in the courtroom for every client who walks through his office doors.
