Aneka Jiwaji joined Jiwaji Law as co-founder and counsel this week, making this move more than a leadership update. It is a signal to where the Vancouver-based firm is heading and how it plans to compete in a crowded legal market without losing its sense of purpose.
Founded in 2025 by Afshaan Jiwaji, Jiwaji Law was built on a simple but ambitious idea – commercial legal services should be rigorous, strategic and deeply human. With Aneka now joining the firm, that vision is expanding into a full barrister-and-solicitor model designed to serve businesses across Canada with both precision and range.
The sisters bring complementary strengths to the table. Afshaan leads the firm’s solicitor-side practice, advising clients on transactions, growth, governance and intellectual property. Aneka, who will now lead the barrister practice, comes with a litigation résumé shaped inside some of British Columbia’s most demanding legal environments. Her background includes work at respected regional, national and international law firms, a role as Litigation Counsel at the British Columbia Securities Commission, and most recently, a leading commercial litigation boutique.
Aneka’s practice spans commercial and securities disputes, regulatory and administrative matters, complex insurance defense and coverage, intellectual property enforcement and tax-related litigation. She has also worked on precedent-setting cases that have helped shape British Columbia’s regulatory and legal framework.
For clients, the combination matters. “Businesses often receive fragmented advice, one firm for deals and another for disputes,” said Afshaan Jiwaji. “With Aneka’s expertise, Jiwaji Law aims to change that by offering integrated counsel under one roof. The result will be legal guidance that anticipates conflict, mitigates risk and supports long-term decision-making rather than reacting after problems arise.”
Speaking on the development, Aneka Jiwaji says, “We’re bringing litigation and transactional thinking together in a way that allows us to compete with the largest firms, without losing the care, focus, and responsiveness of a boutique practice.”
That balance is central to the firm’s identity. Jiwaji Law positions itself as highly specialized rather than full-service, focusing on commercial law, securities, tax, intellectual property and litigation.
The firm’s national reach also sets it apart. While headquartered in Vancouver, Jiwaji Law advises clients across Canada, supporting founders, established businesses and institutional clients navigating increasingly complex regulatory and commercial landscapes.
Equity and access are also part of the firm’s operating model. Jiwaji Law has committed to pro bono initiatives supporting women-led startups and underrepresented entrepreneurs, reflecting a broader belief that strong legal infrastructure should not be limited to those with the deepest pockets.
There is also history behind the name. The firm builds on a legal legacy that began in 1994, when Moosa Y. Jiwaji founded the original Jiwaji Law in Edmonton. That practice was known for its integrity, rigorous advocacy and long-standing client relationships. Afshaan and Aneka have reimagined that foundation for today’s business environment, carrying forward its values while reshaping its scope.
As women-led law firms gain greater visibility across Canada, Jiwaji Law’s leadership is careful not to frame gender as the headline. The focus, they say, is excellence. “The firm’s ambition is to be recognized not simply as a women-led boutique, but as one of the country’s most competitive and trusted specialized commercial firms,” Afshaan adds.
With two sisters at the helm and a unified vision for modern legal service, Jiwaji Law is betting that clients are ready for a model that blends sharp legal strategy with a more thoughtful, relationship-driven approach. In today’s legal market, that combination may prove to be its strongest differentiator.
